Sorrow Lake

Sorrow Lake

I threw a stone into the lake
As if somehow its glass might break
The ripples rocked to muddy shore
I gathered rocks... And threw some more
Her eyes stared strangely into mine
Beneath her dark and murky shrine
Distorted by the stones I'd thrown
She looked never more alone
And in the darkness crickets sang
Around my throat the air did hang
Restricting every breath I take
Beside the icy lake
Her photograph it slowly sank
I cried with sadness on the bank
And as the tears fell from my eyes
I said my last goodbyes
I stood awhile as if to pray
But had no words of faith to say
So gave a sigh and turned around
And left without a sound
